Joshua Martin They consider themselves the sons of the morning, the bible talks about a time when the snake was the highest of creation - only to be struck down to the "ground" by "God". Perhaps we need think of a proud race whose outer appearance was once a thing of pride, but was taken from them at some point. It is the animosity that is placed between them and humans that genesis speaks of. Don's explanation of them as vain and self conscious makes good sense to me.
These are intelligent and powerful entities, yet if we are to connect anything of biblical demonic to them, the vanity makes sense. It's more about respecting and fearing them than it is our human ideas of vanity and low self esteem.
